Steam

published May 18, 2009

Rainwater makes contact with heated rock underground and rises as steam
from natural vents in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Vegetation gets scorched and soil temperature is too high for many kinds
of plants.

The Kilauea Volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983.

Scientists think its eruptions first began 300,000 to 600,000 years ago.
Humans (homo sapiens) have been around for only 250,000 years.
